Inala Nature Tours Hobart and Southern Tasmania - Birding & Nature Tour Options

To follow are a selection of day tours options for the south of Tasmania.

We can offer either single day tours or multi-day tours by combining several day tour options or choosing one of the suggested longer itineraries below.

If you would like us to create a longer itinerary for adventuring around Tasmania for several days or weeks, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We have over 25 years of experience as a travel consultant and tour operator and specialize in designing personalised itineraries for nature-based tours throughout Australia. We work directly with clients themselves, as well as with travel companies from all over the world. Inala offers a range of options, from accommodation-only stays to all-inclusive tours, and just about everything in between.  We know Tasmania inside and out.

Your guide can collect and return you to your Hobart area accommodation (We are always very happy to assist with your accommodation arrangements) or can collect you directly from a visiting cruise ship at the Hobart dock.

Name of tour: Tasmanian endemic birds of the Hobart area

All of Tasmania’s endemic species of birds occur within 20 minutes drive of the Hobart CBD, and our Inala guides know the best places to find them. Your Inala guide will lead you through wet forests rich in ferns and mosses in search of Tasmanian scrubwren, Tasmanian thornbill, scrubtit and black currawong, drier forests to find our endemic honeyeaters, green rosella, dusky robin and the endangered forty-spotted pardalote, and open country to find Tasmanian native hen. This can be tailored to suit your personal level of physical fitness, ranging from gentle sauntering within a short distance of the car park to strenuous hikes.
We can never guarantee you will see all 12 endemics in the one day, however there is a high chance of at least 8-10 species being seen in a day with average weather conditions.

Name of tour: Forest and woodland birds of Hobart

Hobart is situated on a steep rainfall gradient, ranging from averages of 500 mm to 1350 mm within a distance of 25 km. This promotes the development of a wide variety of forest types, from grassy woodland to wet forests rich in ferns and mosses, and provides opportunities to see many species of birds. Your specialist Inala guide will share their local knowledge of the best places to find a diverse array of birds, including most of Tasmania’s endemic species, and show you the differing habitat requirements of some of these endemic bird species and their congeners. You will learn of the differences between green and eastern rosellas, yellow and little wattlebirds, Tasmanian and brown thornbills, and black and grey currawongs. This can be tailored to suit your personal level of physical fitness, ranging from gentle sauntering within a short distance of the car park to strenuous hikes. And if you like to add on a night tour, our guides know of good locations to see Tasmanian bettongs and eastern barred bandicoots just a few minutes’ drive from the Hobart CBD.

Name of tour: Mt Field National Park and the Derwent Valley

Your expert Inala guide will drive you from Hobart along the banks of Tasmania’s longest river, inland for 1.5 h to Mt Field National Park. Opportunities to stretch your legs during the drive will present themselves when we stop at a freshwater lake to search for waterfowl including freckled duck, and at a river where platypus are often seen within a few metres. While at Mt Field you can take a leisurely stroll or a strenuous hike beneath giant eucalyptus trees in wet forest in search of pink robins, black currawongs, Tasmanian thornbills, green rosellas and other Tasmanian endemic birds, and see spectacular waterfalls in the streams that flow down the sides of Mt Field. And if you would like an alpine experience, your guide can drive you to the top of Mt Field where you will experience a previously glaciated landscape rich in lakes and tarns, bizarre alpine flora, and have good chances of seeing Tasmanian thornbill, Tasmanian scrubwren, scrubtit, black currawong, yellow-throated honeyeater, and crescent honeyeater. At the end of the day, your guide will chauffeur you back to Hobart.

Name of Tour: Hobart to Bruny Island and return

If you do not have the time to spend a night on Bruny Island or to take one of our tours that depart from Inala on South Bruny, then this may be the option for you.  Your specialist guide will craft the day around your interests and you could still choose to visit some birding locations on the Hobart side of the channel before crossing on the 15-minute vehicle ferry from Kettering to explore and enjoy the delights of Bruny Island.

Once on Bruny, and depending on your birding and wildlife wish list, you may visit Inala’s private Nature reserve on South Bruny as well as many other beautiful and diverse locations on this remarkable island.
To catch the first ferry and maximise your time on Bruny, we suggest an early start from Hobart at around 6.45am. Your guide would aim to catch a return ferry by mid/late afternoon to return you to your Hobart destination by 5pm at the latest.

Name of tour: Maria Island National Park

Your Inala guide will collect you from Hobart at 7 am and drive you to Tasmania’s east coast in time for your passenger ferry trip to Maria Island starting at 9 am. The ferry crossing will take around 30 minutes, during which you have a chance of seeing dolphins, gannets, and other seabirds. Once on Maria Island your Inala guide will lead you in search of Cape Barren Goose, the endangered forty-spotted pardalote, and a diverse array of other forest birds. In spring, this can be a good location to see the critically endangered swift parrot in some years.  As access to Maria Island is by passenger ferry, travelling around the island requires walking so a reasonable level of fitness is required to get the most out of this tour. At the end of the day, you will leave the island by passenger ferry and your guide will chauffeur you back to Hobart.

(Ask us about the option of an overnight stay on Maria Island for the opportunity of seeing Tasmanian Devils.  Please note it is no frills bunkhouse accommodation )

(Note from May- August the first ferry to Maria is at 10.30am, the last ferry to return is 3.30pm, the day will be adapted to suit these times)

Name of tour: Southern Forests and Coast

On this tour your Inala guide will collect you from Hobart and drive you to the southernmost road in Australia to find some of Tasmania’s most sought-after species in breathtaking wilderness. Your specialist Inala guide will show you giant eucalyptus trees that tower above the rainforest understorey and lead you in search of the superb lyrebird, pink robin, and many of the Tasmanian endemic birds such as Tasmanian thornbill, Tasmanian scrubwren, scrubtit, black currawong, and green rosella. Your guide will also lead you through buttongrass moorlands in search of eastern ground parrot, southern emu-wren and striated fieldwren.  These activities can be tailored to suit your personal level of physical fitness, ranging from a gentle stroll within a short distance of the car park to strenuous hikes. At the end of the day, your guide will chauffeur you back to Hobart.

(Ask us about an overnight option where you stay in a key southern location for one night and get the opportunity to  try for ground parrots at night and lyre birds early the next morning)

Name of tour: Hartz Mountains National Park

In this tour you will taken on a 1.5 h drive from Hobart through the scenic Huon Valley to visit tall wet eucalypt forests and the formerly glaciated alpine landscape atop Hartz Mountain. In the wet forests, your specialist Inala guide will show you giant eucalyptus trees that tower above the rainforest understorey and lead you in search of the superb lyrebird, pink robin, and many of the Tasmanian endemic birds such as Tasmanian thornbill, Tasmanian scrubwren, scrubtit, black currawong, and green rosella. After driving you on to the base of Hartz Mountain, your guide will lead you past alpine lakes and tarns that formed in glacial cirques, show you the aptly-named cushion plants and search for birds such as black currawong and crescent honeyeater. These activities can be tailored to suit your personal level of physical fitness, ranging from a gentle stroll within a short distance of the car park to strenuous hikes. At the end of the day, your guide will chauffeur you back to Hobart.
This is a day more focused on a unique and spectacular landscape and flora than a huge diversity of bird species.

Name of Tour: Hobart Night Tour

Travel with your guide to some of the amazing reserves located close to the centre of Hobart to look for some of Tasmania’s fantastic creatures of the night.  Possible nocturnal wildlife includes Tasmanian pademelon, Bennett's wallaby, common brushtail possum, common ringtail possum, southern brown bandicoot, long-nosed potoroo, tawny frogmouth, and Tasmanian morepork. There is an outside chance of finding sugar glider, eastern barred bandicoot, eastern bettong and the endangered Tasmanian subspecies of the masked owl and the eastern quoll.
